How-to not to fall into last year’s work habits

We talk the top five ways to ensure that 2018 is your best work-year yet

You’ve got your goals, your new stationery and a clean desk - but how do you keep up good habits into the new year?

Here are five tried-and-tested ways to keep you on track.

  1. Set intentions and keep them where you can see them

We’ve talked alot about the importance of setting goals or intentions, but how do you ensure that your intended purpose becomes actual practice, especially at work when you can so easily get swept up in your inbox and to-do list.

Try reducing your intentions or goals to a few key words, or a simple sentence, and then ensure that it’s somewhere that you’ll see multiple times a day. This could be on your desktop or mobile screensaver, on a post-it note on your desk or at the top of your to-do list daily. Re-reading it regularly will make it easier to embody these values on a daily basis, and will help you to be the best version on you on a daily basis.

2.  Take control of your work space

This means both your headspace and your desk space! We all know the saying ‘clean space, clear mind’, but what kind of rituals can you create that ensure that your early-year clarity extends beyond just your new stationery?

Writing a to-do list before you go-home each night ensures that you feel more in control of your workload and gives you permission to switch off for the evening. This practice may also help you be able to better manage your time on an ongoing basis as you’ll see really clearly what needs to be prioritised and what is urgent for the coming day.

3.  Simply good habits

Habits are hard to build and take time to become routine, so why not take the guesswork out of this process in the meantime? This means pre-booking and organising yourself, so that your new goals are part of your standard daily routine.

Want to make the most of your lunch-breaks? Better pre-book that gym class or block out the time in your calendar.

Want to eat healthier in 2018? Perhaps you should consider a meal-delivery service or set a weekly meal plan.

Be kind to yourself and make it easier to choose the best choice that feeds into your bigger picture goals.

4.  Set aside time for growth and learning

We often want to grow professionally in the year ahead - ie, get that promotion, pay-rise or start our own business, but we rarely think about what learning or influence we need to bring into our life to make it happen. The most important thing to remember here is that this process takes dedicated and ongoing time, so you’ll need to carve out time in your daily routine for it.

Why not strictly dedicate your commute time to reading around topics of growth? Following the right people who will bring you this kind of content is a great way to start, as well as curating your Podcasts and Social feeds. And don’t forget newsletters, as these deliver the best and most relevant content - straight to your inbox. Easy peasy. If you haven’t yet subscribed to Wellineux’s weekly newsletter, here is the best place to do so. Each week we wrap up our most inspiring interviews and content, as well as any early bird offers to events and workshops.

5.  Celebrate milestones and regular check-in time

Having events, check-ins and occasions scheduled in throughout the year definitely serves as an incentive to keep up the good work.

Depending on your goals or intentions, there are a plethora of opportunities that you can be involved in and schedule in ahead of time, but this is another one that you have to pre-book. There is something about handing over the cash and putting it in the calendar, that says - this is a real thing.

This could be a dinner at a restaurant you love or want to try in three months time to celebrate you keeping up your goals or achieving a milestone towards your intentions (which you will!), a mini-break or holiday to evaluate, or an event or workshop to check-in and connect with a like minded community.
