Making self-love the start of all love


By the time Valentine's Day rolls into the commercial occasions calendar, there is a lot of talk and presence on our feeds about the concept of love and it’s associated gifts. It’s easy to roll our eyes at such an occasion, but a celebration of love should be a time to reflect on our most loving relationship of all—the one we have with ourselves.

Self-love comes in many different forms and there is no way to formulate how each individual practices self love. Think about what makes you truly happy? When do you feel most content? And what activities feel indulgent or special in your routine?

Knowing this, enables us to better navigate our relationships with others, and like the time-old saying goes, in order to love another, we must first love ourselves.

Like anything that we want to become better at, self-love is a dedicated practice. It’s about carving time out in your schedule, that is dedicated to just you. Sometimes it can take as much as diary-dating yourself as a reminder, or telling people that you’re on a plan-ban during this period— once this time is established and set aside, you’ll quickly see the benefits and it will be easier to make it routine.

The best way to start a self-love schedule is to trial different rituals to see which one fits best with your life, and remember that you can always mix them up as dependant upon your schedule and energy levels. Perhaps it could be as simple as turning off the TV tonight to replace it with 30 minutes of self-pampering, or maybe you could block out the whole day on the weekend to wander the world without any plans or deadline. Work out what makes you feel best, and make time to do that often.

Developing a loving relationship with your own-self and body, not only increases your mental clarity, energy and confidence, it also allows us to give the best versions of ourselves to others. By filling our own cup, we have more to offer the world.
