Creativity is For Everyone.

creativity is for everyone

“Creativity is not just for artists. It’s for business people looking for a new way to close a sale; it’s for engineers trying to solve a problem; it’s for parents who want their children to see the world in more than one way”

- Michael Neil

Whether you call yourself creative or not, creativity is something which none of us is devoid of.

I doubted this in the past having seen myself as useless with a paintbrush or overwhelmed by a piano, but now things look very different to me.

Creativity is bringing something to life that previously wasn’t there. Something new, fresh and different. It might feel small like changing the title of a presentation or something big like one of my amazing clients who designs incredible shoes.

No matter the size or focus, it is creativity in action.

What I see now is that some days I feel more able to be creative than others and I see that in the world around me.  Some days I feel devoid of ideas, lost in the washing machine of thoughts spinning in my mind, desperately trying to work harder and think more to work something out.

And guess what? I can’t. In fact, the thinking, the churning and the trying so very hard makes a solution seem further out of my reach than before. It can seem so counterintuitive but the more activity we add in, the busier our mind becomes. The more burdened and noisier a place it is, the more illusive new ides become.

Yet when we are in an unburdened mind with less floating around, we find it much easier to be creative. To tune into the unknown and see what it can provide us with. It seems obvious, but we forget it all the time.

We forget it when we have a deadline that we desperately have to hit.

We forget it when facing a challenging situation.

We forget it when our to do list and inbox are bulging.

Yet these are the times when we need creativity most. These are the times when what we know isn’t working for us and seeing something fresh and new can be transformative.

The next time you feel overwhelmed or like the dragon is breathing down your neck, maybe it’s a reminder of the futility of fuelling the fire of worries. Maybe it’s a nudge to refocus your attention on what lies in the quiet beyond the roaring flames.

Who knows what might appear when you look in a new direction?
