How to Think Outside the Square within your Workplace

Take a moment to think about how you feel when you step into your workplace. From empowering to unmotivated, indifferent and everything in-between, research continues to confirm the strong link between workplace, wellness and performance.

Now before you start thinking about renovating your teams space, it’s important to understand that workplace is more than just the aesthetics, and is defined by the following three key areas:

  1. Demographic mix

  2. Employee benefits

  3. Layout

From here, it’s important to revisit your organisations commitment to a wellness culture before you start to plan and implement initiatives that address each of the above key areas.

And just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, it’s also important to know that small steps towards a wellness culture in the workplace will make a difference. According to Gallup’s studies, a five point increase in wellbeing on a 100 point scale greatly improves team member engagement, wellbeing and productivity. Similarly, the reverse is also true. For example, if one team member rates their wellbeing as 75 and another team member rates theirs as 70, the second team member has:

  • 18.6% higher risk of sleep disorders

  • 15% higher risk of anxiety or depression

  • 14.6% higher risk of diabetes

  • 6.3% higher risk of obesity

  • 0.6 sick days in the past 30 days

As you start to turn your workplace into one your team members excel in, you’ll start to reap all the benefits of a more engaged, productive, healthy and happy workforce who are ultimately committed to driving an increase in profit. You’ll also retain and attract the best talent, something every organisation strives for.
