Covid-19 is giving people a different perspective on how we view food.  Now, quality nutrition is being seen as an essential for survival.  The connection between nutrition and disease is under the spotlight and the role that nutrition plays in supporting a healthy immune system.

Based on our conversations with clients and trends across the world here is what we believe the future of Nutrition will hold:

Connection between Nutrition, Mind & Body

People are becoming more aware of their psychological impact based on what they eat. Understanding our Mind - body connection is important for us to take control of our diet and health. The better the food we eat, the better we feel physically and mentality. After your next meal take notice of how you feel after...do you feel relaxed? Stuffed? Stressed? Regret?

Eating Local and Seasonal

Before covid we were eating food from all of the world that technically wasn't in our backyard or the diets we grew up on. Given that the accessibility to foreign food has been limited and also chains have been closed down,  households are getting back to eating what is locally available and seasonal. Check your farmers market or local food store what is local and seasonal, sometimes they will even have recipes to create simple and easy meals from these products.

Farmers Markets & Fresh Food Delivery

Households will continue to shop at farmers markets for local produce and utilise fresh food delivery as opposed to large supermarket chains.  Support your local farmers market, even as large supermarket chains start to increase the number of people allowed in-store, it is a great way to get the freshest produce, meet your local farmers and build community.

Home Gardens

The need and realisation to become self sufficient has piqued interest in home gardening. Planting home gardens, creating veggie towers and salad walls.  No matter if you are in a house or in an apartment there are opportunities to create gardens that suit your needs. Notice what vegetables or herbs you utilise often and based your home identify where is appropriate to create a mini garden.

Focus on being more plant-based

Supermarkets in the US are beginning to decrease red meat, sugar sections and making more space for fruit and vegetables.  Given the origin of COVID there has been and the environmental impacts of a meat based diet, there are trends in the increase of a plant-based diet. Try swapping just one meal a day  to plant-based. If you do that every day it has a significant impact on the environment.

Less about Diets trends, more interest in personalised medicine.

Moving away from being contained to a diet category such as keto, vegan, paleo, etc.... Individuals are looking more towards what they should be eating for their unique body type.  Understanding what our heritage ate and using Genetic heritage to help us decide what we can digest best. Work with a qualified professional, such as a health coach to understand how you can experiment with food to eat for your unique body type.

Cooking at Home & Simplicity of meals

The kitchen has become the focal point of the house again.  Bringing families together but also the joy in cooking is back.  Making things from scratch and being able to utilise what we have to create meals.  Make it a point to eat meals at home even as restaurants start to re-open again, utilize recipe boxes or cookbooks to advance your cooking skills.
